Because I am an Orthodox Jew, I had already signed up for Sabbath. It was Saturday night that I first heard about it. When I opened my computer to check the news, the first thing I saw was the protests at the Airport. They were both there, and I was able to see them simultaneously. First, I thought, “OK, I need to read the ban.” Is this what people claim it to be? It’s often exaggerated as to what is actually happening. The second question is: Why are these protests even happening?
You will soon realize that the ban was a tactic to placate an element of the base who wanted to improve vetting procedures. The ban was not the problem. The problem was not the ban. They said yes. It seemed a bit amateurish. You would want to coordinate such a large event a few days in advance, I would think. No matter what you think about the travel ban, its implementation was a disaster.
How?
It was a PR disaster. It was a disaster for public policy. The administration was in disarray. Different branches of the administration didn’t know what they wanted. There was a disconnect at top. It doesn’t matter what you think about the policy, it is different from how it was implemented. The implementation was a mess, which opened up the doors to protests and negative headlines.
People who have spoken to us about this claim that they feel Bannon’s hand in the Friday wait…. [that] he] wanted people to be able flood the airports on the weekends to protest, to cause chaos, and for protests to start.
One of the greatest myths about the campaign and the administration is that everyone is playing 4-D Chess every day, that there is always some grand plan. They are not playing 4-D Chess. They are a Wookiee, who takes the arm from the socket of the droid and beats them to death. This is not a grand plan. They don’t sit around all Friday saying, “You know, I’d love it if thousands of protesters spontaneously showed up at airports to destroy travel for three days.” They call Bannon. Bannon likely had a gut reaction and said, “Yeah. We’re not going to let anyone in without vetting. That includes the Green Card holders.” They put it into practice, then there is blowback. Then they claim that there was a plan. This I believe is a fairly common symptom, it’s been a common occurrence within the administration lately.
The idea was that these men were sitting there, Jeff Sessions and Steve Miller, and saying “OK, we’re gonna have a flurry 100 executive actions.” They said to the president, “Let’s get it done.” Let’s not force these things upon people.
